How Much Does YouTube Pay in Nigeria? What Views Are Worth, and What Actually Reaches Your Account
Ask five Nigerian YouTubers and you will get five numbers. The reason is that "what YouTube pays" and "what lands in your bank" are two different amounts.

Search this question and you will find screenshots of big numbers and calculators that quote American rates. Neither helps a creator in Lagos, Ibadan or Port Harcourt decide whether a channel is worth the effort.
So here is the honest version. We will cover who gets paid at all, what a thousand views is worth, what disappears between YouTube and your account, and what to do about it. One note before we start: the rate figures below are illustrative assumptions, not measured Nigerian averages. We say where each number comes from.
The Short Answer
YouTube pays Nigerian creators by share of ad revenue, and the rate per thousand views (RPM) depends mostly on where your viewers are, not where you live. Credible reporting puts the cost per thousand views for Nigerian audiences as low as about $1, against up to $10 for US audiences. At an illustrative $1 to $2 per thousand views, 100,000 views is roughly ₦140,000 to ₦280,000 before costs and tax. Payouts start only once you reach $100 in earnings, and money reaches Nigerian creators by wire transfer.
The number to plan around is not the headline rate. It is what is left after the leaks, which we cover below.
Step 1: Can You Be Paid at All?
As of October 2026, YouTube has two tiers, and Nigeria is on Google's list of countries for the expanded programme.
Tier | You need | You unlock |
|---|---|---|
Expanded YPP | 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days | Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Thanks, Shopping |
Full YPP | 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 watch hours in 12 months or 10 million public Shorts views in 90 days | Everything above, plus a share of ad and YouTube Premium revenue |
You also need to follow monetization policies, turn on 2-Step Verification and link an active AdSense account.
This changes older advice. A 2025 TechCabal piece listed channel memberships as needing 30,000 subscribers in Nigeria. Under the current expanded programme, the entry point for fan funding is far lower. Rules move, so check your own YouTube Studio.
Step 2: What Is a Thousand Views Worth?
Two terms matter, and most articles blur them.
CPM is what advertisers pay per thousand ad views.
RPM is what you actually earn per thousand video views, after YouTube takes its share and counting views that showed no ad. RPM is the one to plan around.
What do we know about Nigeria specifically? Less than the internet pretends.
Creator Tayo Aina told Fast Company in 2020 that a video with over 1.1 million views earned him about $132. That works out to roughly $0.12 per thousand views, and he said it was far below what a Western audience would pay.
He also said Nigerian CPM can be as low as $1 per 1,000 views, against up to $10 in the US.
Nigeria does not appear among the top countries for CPM in the 2025 ranking TechCabal cited. The US, Australia and Norway do.
We found no reliable, recent measured RPM average for Nigerian channels. Sites that publish exact Nigerian figures rarely show their method. So treat the table as a way to think, not a promise.
Views to naira (illustrative, at ₦1,400 per dollar)
Your RPM (assumption) | Roughly what it suits | 100,000 views | 1,000,000 views | Views to reach the $100 payout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
$0.50 | Mostly Nigerian audience, entertainment | ₦70,000 | ₦700,000 | 200,000 |
$1 | Mostly Nigerian audience, general content | ₦140,000 | ₦1,400,000 | 100,000 |
$2 | Mixed audience, some US, UK or Canada viewers | ₦280,000 | ₦2,800,000 | 50,000 |
$5 | Strong foreign audience, or a high-value niche | ₦700,000 | ₦7,000,000 | 20,000 |
Notice the last column. At $1 RPM you need 100,000 monetized views before the first cheque. A channel getting 10,000 views a month would wait about ten months.
Two more caveats. Shorts typically pay far less per view than long videos. And the exchange rate swings the naira figure, so recalculate with today's rate.

Step 3: The Three Leaks Between YouTube and Your Account
Leak 1: US tax withholding
YouTube must withhold US tax on earnings from US viewers. According to a law firm's guide published in December 2025, the standard rate is 30% for non-residents, and treaty countries can claim lower rates. If you submit no tax information, Google may apply a default rate of up to 24% to your worldwide earnings, not just the US share.
To our knowledge Nigeria does not have an income tax treaty with the US, so assume the higher rate applies to your US-viewer earnings. Confirm this with the IRS treaty list or a tax professional.
Submit the form inside AdSense under Payments info, then Manage tax info. Individuals usually file a W-8BEN. Doing nothing is the costly option.
Leak 2: How the money travels
AdSense lists the payment methods available by country. For Nigeria, the page shows check and wire transfer, and not EFT or PayPal Hyperwallet. You cannot change your payment currency.
A June 2026 guide from Cleva, which sells USD accounts and so has an interest, says earnings release once your balance reaches $100 and pay out monthly, typically between the 21st and 26th of the following month. It also claims creators lose 5% to 8% to conversion and fees, without giving a source. Banks differ, so check what yours charges for an incoming dollar wire.
Leak 3: Nigerian tax
Money you earn is income, wherever it was paid from. Under the Nigeria Tax Act, which took effect in January 2026, the first ₦800,000 of taxable income is taxed at 0%, and bands from 15% to 25% apply above that. What counts is taxable income after allowable costs, which is why records matter. We cover what you can deduct in our guide to tax deductions Nigerian creators can claim.
A Worked Example
Meet Ada, a hypothetical creator. Her channel is in the full programme and gets 120,000 monetized views a month, mostly from Nigeria. The figures are round numbers chosen to show the method.
Step | Amount |
|---|---|
Assumed RPM | $1.50 |
Gross ad earnings (120 thousand views x $1.50) | $180.00 |
Share of that from US viewers (assumed 15%) | $27.00 |
US tax withheld at 30% on that share | $8.10 |
Left after withholding | $171.90 |
Assumed 5% lost to conversion and fees | about $8.60 |
Arrives in the bank | about $163.30 |
In naira at ₦1,400 | about ₦228,600 a month |
So 120,000 views, which sounds substantial, becomes roughly ₦228,000 a month before Nigerian tax and before her costs for data, editing and equipment. That is useful money, but it is not a salary on its own. It is also why creators who earn well on YouTube rarely depend on ads alone.
Why Ads Are Rarely the Whole Business
The outliers exist. Pastor Jerry Eze's channel was reported by Punch and Premium Times in 2024 to have earned about ₦7 billion between 2014 and 2024, based on Playboard data, which is an estimate. Reaching that scale takes years, a very large audience and a format built for it. It is not a planning baseline.
For most creators the stronger play is to treat ad revenue as one stream among several:
Sell something directly. Templates, courses, consulting, merchandise, a paid community.
Take brand deals. Sponsors pay for your audience's attention at a price you set, instead of the algorithm's.
Accept support. Viewers who want to tip or pay for a service need somewhere to send money that works for you.
Use the fan funding YouTube offers. Memberships and Super Chat are open at the lower tier, but payouts still travel the same wire route.
If you want to model this properly, our guide to building a revenue forecast walks through floor, expected and stretch scenarios.
What To Do This Month
Check your tier. Open YouTube Studio, then Earn, and see which programme you qualify for.
File your tax form in AdSense before your first payment, not after.
Ask your bank what it charges for an incoming dollar wire, and which account suits it.
Find your real RPM. After you have a few months of data, use your own Studio numbers and replace the table above.
Add one non-ad stream. Even a simple payment link in your description changes your income picture.
